After initial entry into the body, the antigen in the COVID-19 vaccine produces plasma cells and synthesizes secreted antibodies after a certain incubation period. The first antibodies to appear are IgM, but they are short-lived, low in concentration, have low affinity, persist in the blood for days to weeks and are diagnostic indicators of acute infection; IgG levels peak when IgM is close to disappearing, IgG is produced late, but is high in concentration, long-lasting and has high affinity, and a positive serum IgG indicates an intermediate or previous infection.

In a study of COVID-19 patients, researchers found that IgM antibodies take approximately 5-7 days to be produced and IgG antibodies are produced at 10-15 days after the virus has invaded the body.
