In May 2007, the 60th World Health Assembly passed a resolution to designate April 25th or one or several days determined by individual member countries as World Malaria Day starting from 2008. April 25, 2024 is the 17th World Malaria Day. As one of the most serious parasitic diseases in the world, malaria still poses a threat to the lives of billions of people worldwide. The promotional theme for World Malaria Day 2024 is to accelerate the fight against malaria and build a more equitable world.
Malaria, commonly known as “playing around” or “spreading malaria”, is an infectious disease mainly caused by mosquito bites or the introduction of blood carrying malaria parasites. It is a preventable and treatable blood parasitic disease. There are five types of human malaria parasites: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium knowlesi, which can parasitize in human liver cells and red blood cells.
According to the 2023 World Malaria Report released by the World Health Organization, malaria was prevalent in 85 countries and regions worldwide in 2022, with an estimated number of malaria cases of approximately 249 million, an increase of 5 million compared to 2021. The current malaria epidemic areas are mainly distributed in Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, Oceania and other regions, with high prevalence in Africa and Southeast Asia. China has obtained the World Health Organization’s certification to eliminate malaria on June 30, 2021. However, there are still a large number of imported malaria cases reported each year, and there are occasional cases of critical illness and death. The epidemic factors for malaria transmission have not been eliminated, and the risk of re transmission continues to exist. Therefore, malaria cannot be ignored, and the whole society still needs to attach great importance to preventing the importation and re transmission of malaria, and continuously consolidate the achievements of elimination.
