World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

8 May 2024 marks the 77th World Red Cross Day. The theme of this year’s event is: The Spirit of humanity, Live forever.

In 1948, with the consent of the Executive Committee of the International Federation, 8 May, the birthday of the founder of the Red Cross, Mr. Henri Dunant, was declared Red Cross Day. On this day, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies commemorate the day in various forms to express the international character of the Red Cross movement and the character of the Red Cross humanitarian work regardless of race, religion or political opinion.

Basic principles of Red Cross Day
Humanitarian: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is meant to provide medical care to the wounded on the battlefield without discrimination. Work to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it occurs, both at the international and national levels. The purpose of the movement is to protect human life and health; Safeguarding human dignity; To promote mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation among people; Promote lasting peace.
Justice: The Movement does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, race, religion, class prejudice or political opinion, and strives to alleviate human suffering solely on the basis of need, giving priority to those most in need.
Neutrality: In order to continue to enjoy the trust of all, the Movement does not take sides between the two sides of the conflict and does not at any time engage in political, ethnic, religious or ideological arguments.
Independence: The movement is independent. Although national Red Cross societies are humanitarian agents of their governments and subject to their national laws, they must always remain independent in order to act at all times in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
Universal: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is worldwide. In the movement, all Red Cross societies enjoy equal status, have the same responsibilities and obligations, and support each other.
Unity: There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent society in any country. It must be open to all and must carry out humanitarian work throughout the country.
Volunteering: The movement is a voluntary movement and does not expect to benefit in any way.
